inspired by matthew's 1/19 post

my car rumbled up to the stoplight at i25 & colorado blvd., and before i could divert my gaze, i'd made eye contact with the bum on the corner who was holding a sign that read: "cold & hungry. please help me." i quickly looked down to fiddle with the radio controls and straighten my bag in the passenger's seat. then, after sitting for a few seconds, staring straight ahead, i grabbed a loose dollar bill from the car console, rolled the window down and held the bill out. the bum came over and reached for it. while both our hands were still holding the bill she looked into my face, smiled and said, "you have beautiful eyes."

ten billion stars

we haven’t ventured out into the mountains after nightfall, but we plan to camp out soon with some friends of matthew’s that live just north of boulder. i imagine i’ll be snuggled tight in my sleeping bag under ten billion stars, the night cold on my face and in my lungs. The mountains’ silence will ring in my ears and God will seem a little closer.

an afternoon hike

matthew and i drove 30 minutes to the west and a little north to find ourselves in the mountains that i can see from my apartment window. we hiked a trail far from the highway and from the city’s voice. trails like these are where the smell of pine and earth are the strongest. as we walked along the path, matthew reached back to take my hand and the air was sweetened for a few paces when we passed a patch of wild flowers. the air was cool as it breezed through my hair and the afternoon was warm on my shoulders. the only sounds were of our feet on the ground, the pounding in our chests and the waking of aspen leaves above us.

i look out...

...the back window of my 2nd floor apartment in aurora, colorado and see the rocky mountains. some days, the clouds are low and cover the peeks like a shawl. other days, the sky is so clear that i see the ragged edges of each mountain top, and i can even see snow that’s lingered from last winter’s storms. this evening, clouds are swirled above the peaks in blues and purples, reminding me of a watercolor my father painted when i was eight years old.

something new!

dig it:
http://cochronicles.blogspot.com/

"the colorado chronicles" is a new blog that matthew and i both contribute to so that our family and friends are able to see pictures and read posts about the goings-on in our lives while we're out here in denver. so if you're bored and want to know what's going on, come check it out.

"the colorado chronicles" is a FAMILY-FRIENDLY blog, so keep it clean, people! i don't want matthew's memom to read it and cry.

hello denver

matthew and i have been in denver for a little over a week now, and i think the weather just might be crazier here than it was in lubbock. one hour it can be in the high 80's with clear skies, and the next hour a huge thunderhead will come up over the mountains and pound us with rain and hail for a while, dropping the temperature a good 10-15 degrees. when the storm passes, the skies clear off again and it warms back up. crazy.

so far, i love it here. i see mountains everyday through my apartment windows, the people have been helpful and friendly, and there's always something to do!

matthew and i are setting up a new blog together to journal our colorado adventures and such, so i'll post the link as soon as it's up and running.

i miss you l-town folks!

goodbye l-town

only 2 days left at rcp, and only 4 days left in lubbock. i have to admit i'm feeling rather sad about saying goodbye and i've been reminiscing about all the good times here. the move will be a difficult one, but i have a feeling it'll prove to also be a fun and exciting one. i can't wait to find out what shape mine and matthew's lives will take in denver...
